The Taiwan Rhinoceros Beetle (Trypoxylus dichotomus tsunobosonis) is found in Taiwan and is a close cousin of the iconic Japanese Rhino Beetle or カブトムシ.  It is a favorite of children growing up in Asia.

These rhino beetles are seasonal and tend to emerge in the late spring when they fly about looking for mates and tree sap to feed on.  By the time summer is through so are most of the rhino beetles having mated and ensuring that the next generation goes on.

Male Taiwan rhinos can get up to 80mm on the large side.  Females do not have the characteristic horn of the males although the body size is similar.

These beetles are extremely easy to care for and to breed and make for a great beginner species.  What they lack in lifespan is made up for with their easy care and breeding for following generations.

Suggested substrate container sizes for Taiwan Rhinoceros Beetle larvae are:

  • L1: 8 oz. container
  • L2: 16 oz. container
  • L3: 32-48 oz. container

Adult Taiwan Rhino Beetles can eat soft fruits such as banana, melons, peaches, etc.  Buying organic produce is a better option to avoid pesticides that can be found in fruit.  Also stay away from citrus fruits (too acidic) and watermelon as it's water content is too high to use as a regular food source.  The best choice though is probably beetle jelly since it is designed to provide beetles with the proper nutrients and with additional protein (helpful for breeding).
